Why Easter Eggs?

Thursday 13th April 2017

The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. Christians remember that Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the dead. This miracle showed that life could win over death. For Christians the egg is a symbol of Jesus' resurrection, as when they are cracked open they stand for the empty tomb. No-one actually knows when eggs were first used as symbols at festival times but it was long before Jesus' time. Eggs were always thought to be special because although they do not seem alive, they have life within them especially at springtime when chicks hatch out. Long ago people gave gifts of eggs carved from wood or precious stones. The first sweet eggs that were eaten…

Sowerby Bridge and the Ryburn Valley

Friday 7th April 2017

Sowerby Bridge and the Ryburn Valley Back with our blog on the best places to visit in Calderdale. Sowerby Bridge has something for everyone, beautiful walks along the canal, great places to eat and some of the best night life around. Its a place you wont want to leave Sowerby Bridge has been a crossing point on the Calder and Ryburn rivers since the Middle Ages and probably long before that. Domestic weaving in the hilltop villages of Sowerby and Norland gave way to the building of large water powered mills by the River Calder. Transportation was provided by the building of roads, canals and later, the railway. Most of the mills are now closed, many have found a new lease of…

The only way is pup!

Monday 20th February 2017

As people get older, climbing up stairs can be a bit of a challenge. And it's not just humans who have this issue. If you're a pet owner, you'll know our four legged friends can struggle as well. But now stairs are no longer a problem for three dachshunds in one West Yorkshire home. Animal lovers from West Yorkshire were so concerned about their pet Dachshund's bad back they splashed out £1,500 on a stairlift. Sheila Lee, from Ossett, volunteers for West Yorkshire Dog Rescue, where she rescued her dog, Pippa. Pippa developed a bad back, and Sheila and her husband Harry had to fork out thousands for a spine operation. So to stop their other two dogs, Millie and Heidi, developing the…

Hebden Bridge

Monday 20th February 2017

Ask people where they know in Calderdale and many will say Hebden Bridge, so it seems fitting that we should start our little information blog about one of the breath taking towns not just here in the Calder Valley but anywhere in the UK This handsome little town is awash with creativity - from the artists and musicians hard at work in their studios to the Arts and Music Festival held every year. The town also has a number of famous literary 'residents', including Sylvia Plath whose grave can be found on a medieval settlement in the hills above the town, and former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes whose birthplace can be found in the nearby village of Mytholmroyd Hebden Bridge's cobbled lanes…

I think Calderdale is the best place in the country, from the historic towns and wonderful country side Calderdale has something to offer everyone, but I only have to travel a few miles from home to be asked where is Calderdale? This question has prompted me to make this blog and over the coming weeks I will highlighting some of the fantastic reasons why to visit this wonderful region. To start lets see what is says on the internet The Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale is a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. It takes its name from the River Calder, whose upper part flows through the borough. Several small valleys contain tributaries of the River Calder. The population at the 2011 Census was…

What a straight stairlift is

Monday 23rd January 2017

What is a straight stairlift? It is stairlift which runs on one straight piece of rail/track (hence its name). What type of staircase it is suitable for A straight stairlift is only suitable for staircases which are straight. Where there is a curve in the staircase, a straight stairlift should never be fitted. The same goes if there is a bend in the staircase. In some cases, if there is sufficient space in the bend on the staircase, it could be possible to fit 2 straight stairlifts on the staircase (one on each of the straight sections of the staircase). Where a staircase is either curved or has a bend in it, you should install a stairlift where the rail/track can be curved. This…

What a curved stairlift is

Thursday 19th January 2017

A curved stairlift is one of the two main types of stairlifts that you can install in your house. The other main type being a straight stairlift. In this short article, I will explain what a curved stairlift is, for what type of stairs they are suitable for and the advantages and disadvantages of having this type of stairlift. What is a curved stairlift? It is stairlift which runs on a piece of rail/track that can be curved (hence its name). What type of staircase it is suitable for? It is suitable for any…
